
Bread and Butter Pudding (Classic British Recipe)
A traditional British dessert made with buttered bread baked in a rich vanilla custard. It’s warm, comforting, and often served with cream or custard.
Ingredients (Serves 4–6)
- 6–8 slices white bread (slightly stale works best)
- 40 g butter, softened
- 50 g Raisins or Sultanas
- 3 eggs
- 500 ml milk
- 60 g sugar
- 1 tsp Vanilla extract
- ½ tsp Ground cinnamon or Ground nutmeg
- Optional: 100 ml double cream (for richer custard)
Instructions
1. Prepare the bread
- Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan) / 350°F.
- Butter the bread slices and cut each into triangles.
2. Layer the pudding
- Grease a baking dish.
- Arrange a layer of bread (butter side up).
- Sprinkle some raisins/sultanas.
- Repeat layers until the dish is filled.
3. Make the custard
- In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, milk, cream (optional), and vanilla.
- Pour the custard evenly over the bread.
- Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top.
- Let it soak for about 10 minutes.
4. Bake
- Bake for 30–35 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden.
Serve
- Warm with:
- pouring cream
- custard sauce
- or a scoop of Vanilla ice cream
Tips
- Slightly stale bread absorbs the custard better.
- You can also use Brioche or Challah for a richer pudding.
- Add orange zest or chocolate chips for variation.
