Bread and Butter Pudding (Classic British Recipe)

A traditional British dessert made with buttered bread baked in a rich vanilla custard. It’s warm, comforting, and often served with cream or custard.

Ingredients (Serves 4–6)

  • 6–8 slices white bread (slightly stale works best)
  • 40 g butter, softened
  • 50 g Raisins or Sultanas
  • 3 eggs
  • 500 ml milk
  • 60 g sugar
  • 1 tsp Vanilla extract
  • ½ tsp Ground cinnamon or Ground nutmeg
  • Optional: 100 ml double cream (for richer custard)

Instructions

1. Prepare the bread

  1. Preheat oven to 180°C (160°C fan) / 350°F.
  2. Butter the bread slices and cut each into triangles.

2. Layer the pudding

  1. Grease a baking dish.
  2. Arrange a layer of bread (butter side up).
  3. Sprinkle some raisins/sultanas.
  4. Repeat layers until the dish is filled.

3. Make the custard

  1. In a bowl, whisk eggs, sugar, milk, cream (optional), and vanilla.
  2. Pour the custard evenly over the bread.
  3. Sprinkle cinnamon or nutmeg on top.
  4. Let it soak for about 10 minutes.

4. Bake

  • Bake for 30–35 minutes until the custard is set and the top is golden.

Serve

  • Warm with:
    • pouring cream
    • custard sauce
    • or a scoop of Vanilla ice cream

Tips

  • Slightly stale bread absorbs the custard better.
  • You can also use Brioche or Challah for a richer pudding.
  • Add orange zest or chocolate chips for variation.
