Important things to do when moving from South Africa to the United Kingdom
Moving countries involves a lot of preparation. Here’s a practical checklist to help make the transition smoother.
Before you leave South Africa
- Check your visa conditions and make sure you have all the required documents, including your passport, visa, and any sponsorship or employment paperwork.
- Bring original documents, such as birth certificates, marriage certificates, educational qualifications, and driving licence records.
- Make certified copies and digital scans of important documents.
- Notify your bank and insurance providers that you are moving abroad.
- Research the cost of living in the area where you will be living.
- Arrange accommodation before you arrive if possible.
Financial preparation
- Bring enough savings to cover your first few months, as setting up bank accounts and receiving your first salary can take time.
- Inform your South African bank of your move.
- Check whether your UK employer offers relocation assistance or temporary accommodation.
When you arrive in the UK
Register with a GP
Register with a local NHS doctor (GP) as soon as you have a permanent address so you can access routine healthcare when needed.
Open a UK bank account
You’ll need a UK bank account for salary payments and direct debits. Many banks require proof of address and identification.
Get a National Insurance number
If you don’t already have one, you’ll need one to work and pay tax in the UK.
Find out about public transport
Learn how local buses and trains operate and consider getting a railcard or local travel card if you commute regularly.
Register for utilities
If you’re renting or buying a home, arrange electricity, gas, water, internet, and council tax accounts where appropriate.
Driving
- South Africans can usually drive in the UK on their South African licence for a limited period, after which they may need to obtain a UK licence depending on the applicable rules.
- Familiarise yourself with UK road signs and motorway driving.
Employment
- Keep copies of your employment contract and payslips.
- Learn how the PAYE tax system works.
- Understand your pension and workplace benefits.
Adjusting to life in the UK
- Buy warm, waterproof clothing before winter.
- Expect shorter daylight hours during winter months.
- Learn local customs such as queueing etiquette and recycling rules.
- Join community groups, sports clubs, or South African social groups to build a support network.
Schooling (if moving with children)
If you have children:
- Apply for school places as early as possible.
- Gather school reports and vaccination records from South Africa.
- Research catchment areas if choosing where to live.
Keep in touch with South Africa
- Maintain access to your South African bank accounts if needed.
- Keep copies of tax records and financial documents.
- Stay informed about any South African tax or reporting obligations that may continue to apply after your move.
A useful packing tip
Many South Africans recommend packing important documents, prescription medication, chargers, adapters (the UK uses Type G plugs), a warm jacket, and a few sentimental items in your luggage rather than shipping them separately. Having these essentials immediately available can make your first weeks in the UK much easier.
